Reimagining Singapore’s Architectural Landscape through the lens of a Pioneer Architect

ART 2022

Works by his hand is a series of paintings investigating the historical landscape of Singapore through the eyes of one who designed and constructed it.

This project takes on both a historical and personal mission. It serves as an ode to the original public architectural landscape of post-independent Singapore, preserving the few original public housing and facilities remaining before they are demolished. Works by his hand also honours my late grandfather, an award-winning architect from the pioneer architect team of Singapore, by showcasing the buildings and town plans he worked on throughout his career from the late 1960s to the early 1990s.

In Works by his hands, I conducted observational studies of my grandfather’s architecture by studying his available blueprints, referencing photographs I had taken of the sites and conducting on-site drawings and painting sessions. The project culminated in a series of oil paintings built upon the observational studies, documenting the fading landscape of Singapore and acting as a cultural preserver of the nation’s historical identity as constructed by a pioneering architect of my home country.
